The wisdom and light these intrepid Pilgrims would need in the New World would “break forth” not from their experience and discovery, but from two objective benchmarks: the Lord Jesus Christ and the teachings of Scripture.
Sadly, over more than three centuries those objective standards slowly disappeared from American public education. From The New-England Primer to John Dewey, knowledge went from being Bible-based to being experience-based. With armed security guards now patrolling public schools and American teenagers lagging far behind their international peers in math and science, we can’t help but draw negative conclusions about this change in our educational priorities. Instead of having the Bible quoted in school textbooks, today the Bible can hardly be opened in public schools.
